What is palm oil?

The palm fruit oil we use in some of our products, such as our Yum Yummy Cookies, is a natural oil. It is a non-hydrogenated source of fat that is free of detrimental trans-fatty acids. Palm oil is also cholesterol free, has good digestibility properties and contains a high level of natural antioxidants (such as vitamin E). Palm fruit oil is often viewed as a “bad oil” because it is sometimes confused with palm kernel oil. Our palm oil supplier is a founder member of the Roundtable for the Production of Sustainable Palm Oil. Where do the ingredients in Ella’s Kitchen® products come from?

We care a lot about protecting our environment for our little ones in the future, so we try very hard to keep the travel miles of our ingredients to a minimum. However, to source yummy ingredients such as organic mangoes, we have to travel a little farther afield. All our ingredients are of the highest organic and Soil Association standard, with sustainability an important aspect for us.

The organic chicken is grown in the US.  The organic beef is grown in Uruguay and processed in the US. Likewise with our products, we make these in the US.

Why is there a splash of lemon juice in some Ella’s Kitchen® products?

We want to make our products as safe as possible for little tummies. We found that, because we only use natural organic products that vary with the seasons, some of our organic fruit + veggies is sometimes not as acidic as it should be.

Lemon juice is naturally acidic, and most bugs don’t survive in acidic environments. We therefore sometimes add a dash to doubly ensure that our foods are always safe when the natural acidity of a recipe is less than we’d like. We always check the natural acidity levels, as they could vary because of things like the season of the harvest or the source of the fruits and vegetables. The lemon juice comes from organic lemons and it means we don’t have to heat our yummy organic food to a higher temperature than is absolutely necessary, keeping in all the organic nutrients and yummy flavors.

Organic food is more expensive than non-organic food. Why is it better?

We believe it’s better for your little one because…

Organic baby food contains far fewer additives. Among the additives banned by the USDA National Organic Program (NOP) are hydrogenated fat, aspartame (artificial sweetener) and monosodium glutamate.

Organic food comes from carefully monitored sources with high standards in quality, and many people prefer organic food because they say it tastes better – we think your little one will too!

We believe it’s better for the environment because…

Studies say organic farming causes lower pollution from sprays, produces less carbon dioxide – the main global warming gas – and less dangerous wastes. Organic foods also avoid Genetically Modified (GM) ingredients and crops.

We believe it’s better for animals because…

Organic farmers don’t routinely use antibiotics on their animals and they take the welfare of their animals very seriously under organic standards. The way organic food is produced protects the environment for wildlife, too. The benefits of the organic approach are acknowledged by animal welfare organizations such as Compassion in World Farming.

Where can I buy Ella’s® outside of the USA?

Our yummy products are distributed in the UK, Canada, Australia, Norway, Sweden, Ireland, Finland – you can also buy our food in Hong Kong, Dubai, Estonia, Malta, Bahrain, Latvia and Lithuania.

If you live elsewhere, you can buy Ella’s® from lots of online places, including Airberg Online, a UK-based food export company that specialises in the export of British food to anywhere in the world.

What stages and ages are the different Ella’s Kitchen® products suitable for?

Our yummy foods are perfect for little ones from 4 months and are designed to help them along their weaning journey…

  • Ella’s® 1: It all starts with very First Tastes, super-smooth fruit + veggie puree and, from 6 months, discovering dairy.
  • Ella’s ®2: Your little one is ready to start exploring new flavors at 7 months, with more texture and protein.
  • Ella’s® 3: Our yummy snacks are perfect for little ones from 12 months, when they’re ready to chew and give their new teeth a proper workout!

You can find the recommended ages and stages of each of our products on our colorful packaging, too.

Some Ella’s Kitchen® products contain berries – are they safe to give my little one?

Berries are considered to have lovely healthy benefits, they are full of vitamin C, have delicious flavors and are brightly colored. They can sometimes cause a reaction such as a rash, but unlike some nuts, dairy and gluten, berries are not believed to be detrimental to a child’s health. We do, though, recommend with all foods that they are introduced one at a time to check for any allergies.

To find out more about intolerances, we’d suggest speaking to your pediatrician.

When should my little one start weaning?

There is no right or wrong time.   And there is no correct length of time that it should take. It depends on how ready you and your child are to start weaning. Some moms wait longer because they are not ready to give up the closeness that breast-feeding brings.  Others are ready to wean sooner or have responsibilities or life changes that make it necessary.

The AAP (The American Academy of Pediatrics) recommends that babies be exclusively breastfed for about the first 6 months of life.  This means your baby needs no additional foods (except Vitamin D) or fluids unless medically indicated.

Choose a time when you think your child is ready.  Our Ella’s® 1 products are the perfect compliment for babies 4 months on.

Talk to your baby’s pediatrician/health care provider to get more guidance.

Can I take Ella’s Kitchen® products on a plane?

Our pouches are perfectly fine to be taken on an airplane – in fact, our yummy organic Smoothie Fruits are served to kids on British Airways flights! If you’re putting them in your suitcase, we’d recommend wrapping them in a plastic bag, just in case they get poked or super-squashed, as your suitcases may get thrown around! If you’re taking any into the cabin, we suggest you watch out for overcautious officials who may consider the baby foods liquid and over 100g – Ella’s Dad was once made to open a pouch!

We always recommend contacting your airline before you fly.

Can I freeze Ella’s Kitchen® pouches?

It’s fine to freeze Ella’s Kitchen® Ella’s® 1 products and Smoothie Fruits, but we don’t recommend freezing our Ella’s® 2 or 3 pouches, due to the more grown up ingredients. Our Ella’s® 1 products and Smoothie Fruits should be frozen within 24 hours of opening the pouch, and eaten immediately after the product has been thoroughly defrosted. Remember to always test the temperature before feeding your little ones. We don’t recommend freezing or refrigerating and then reheating baby food that has already been heated up, as this can be unsafe for little ones

Popping Smoothie Fruits in the freezer makes yummy, cooling 100% fruit ice slushies for hot summer days, too!

You can refrigerate Ella’s® 1 range for up to 48 hours after opening and you can keep our Ella’s 2 and 3 pouches in the fridge for up to 24 hours after taking the cap off.

How can Ella’s® pouches have a long shelf life + keep their nutritional value?

Our 4 little secrets help us do what we do – create healthy, safe, tasty and long-shelf-life baby food. Our process helps maintain as many of the nutrients as possible – just like you make at home. What we do is:

  1. Carefully balance our recipes to be sufficiently naturally acidic to be hostile for bugs but safe for babies’ tiny tummies.
  2. Flash-pasteurize the fruit + veggies to kill any existing or dormant bugs.
  3. Fill the pouches hot, to ensure the pouches themselves are free from bugs.
  4. Draw a vacuum and add an inert gas into the top of the pouch, before we screw the caps on tightly. This means that there is no oxygen in the pouch to feed anything nasty in there!

So now you know our secrets!

How do I heat up Ella’s Kitchen® products?

Our Ella’s® 1 and 2 pouches should never be put in a microwave; there are lots of other easy ways to heat them up. Remember to always test the temperature before feeding heated-up food to your little one.

  • The easiest way to warm our Ella’s® 1 and 2 certified USDA organic baby food is to stand the pouch in hot water, giving it a few minutes to heat up.
  • You can squeeze our yummy baby food into a saucepan and gently heat it up while stirring continuously.
  • Or, you can squeeze our yummy baby food into a microwavable bowl and heat it up in the microwave. Give it a good stir to get rid of any hot spots and, as always, test the temperature before feeding your little one.

We don’t recommend heating up Baby Brekkie, as babies love it chilled or at room temperature.

What is Ella’s Kitchen® packaging made from?

All the cardboard outer packaging used for our boxes is 100% recyclable and is made from recycled board.  And we use vegetable inks and water-based coatings to print the boxes.

Our pouches contain aluminium sandwiched between two layers of plastic, to ensure our products are as handy for moms + dads as possible, as it keeps our organic food fresh. The aluminium never comes into direct contact with the food, to ensure it’s safe for tiny tummies.

Both layers of plastic have been chosen to be safe with food. The pouches do not contain any Bisphenol A or Phthalates, which are the main toxin concerns relating to plastics. The aluminium used is BPA free as well, and our caps and ‘straws’ are made from PE plastic, which is very common in food use and has served this type of packaging for many years and is easily recyclable.

Our pouches use 80% less materials than many alternative forms of packaging. An independent audit of the life cycle of our pouches has shown that the energy used, and the environmental impact made when making, transporting and destroying them, is significantly less than PET plastic bottles, Tetra Packs and glass.

We hope that helps keep your mind at rest when feeding your little ones.
